Juddmonte Farm stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit) was provided with his eighth elite-level winner and 68th stakes winner overall when Feed The Flame (3 c ex Knyazhna by Montjeu) produced a late run to land the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr 1, 2400m) at Longchamp on Friday.

Sent off the 13-5 second favourite for trainer Pascal Bary, the three-year-old was nearly four lengths off the lead entering the final furlong but stayed on strongly to beat last-start Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) runner-up Adelaide River (Australia) by a length. The Epsom Oaks heroine Soul Sister (Frankel), who was sent off the 8-5 favourite, finished a further neck behind in third.

Out of the unraced Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) mare Knyazhna, Feed The Flame is a half-brother to the Group 3-winning Group 1 placegetter Sacred Life (Siyouni) and the stakes-placed winner Khagan (Le Havre). Kingman stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £125,000 (approx. AU$239,260).

Following his length success in the Grand Prix de Paris, trainer Pascal Bary is confident that his three-year-old colt Feed The Flame can be a big player in October's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m), with the son of Kingman now a best-priced 14-1 for mainland Europe's most prestigious flat race.

"He's a wonderful horse. In the Jockey Club he suffered a bit, they went fast and [Christophe Soumillon] was obliged to get after him a bit earlier than we would have liked and he didn’t finish his race off as I had hoped. Today, over 2,400 metres, he showed he’s a super horse," Bary said.

"Like all good horses he can really accelerate. He’s actually won relatively easily. When you look at his action and the way he behaved, he’s won well. Jean-Louis [Bouchard, Feed The Flame's owner] started having horses with me in the 1980s and we’ve had plenty of good horses together. Now we have another very good one, closer to the end of our association than the start, it’s super. If he stays in this sort of form he will have a real chance in the Arc. And I hope and think he’s better on softer ground."
